Baking soda helps to modify the washing power of your detergent. Borax added to the wash will also do this. Adding vinegar to the rinse will help to release the soap from the clothes and help to make them cleaner.

Yes, it can. Aside from removing odors, baking soda is also an effective ';softener.';

';Water softeners work by adding some type of salt to the water, which exchanges the ';hard'; calcium and magnesium ions in water for ';soft'; sodium ions, so actually any salt will do--sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is fine. Just add enough so that the water feels ';slippery.';
Baking soda is suposed to be used for odors and good for diapers and clothing has a fresh smell and very soft.
