I've had this problem.
Turn the gaiter around, so that the split is at the top and undamaged rubber from the top is now at the bottom.

Neither of the prices you mention are unreasonable for the job. The ';gator'; probably cost 3p to manufacture in China, but you'd still need to get the right one for your particular machine.
I would love to help....but what the hell is a 'gator'
Think about this, 拢60 call out, 拢90 for the 'gator' =拢150.00
Plus aggravation.
You say you dont have the funds for a new machine, just like most of us....but if somehow you could just find that extra 拢50...you could actually buy a new machine with a bit of searching that has at least 12 months warrenty on it. Could be a better deal?????

I agree turn the gator up to the top ive done this and its a bit tricky but a pair of mole grips are a must cos you need three hands without them Give itArtyo and you will see what I mean about the mole grips. You cant loose as you cant use the washer anyway
