Does using a dishwasher or hand washing dishes use less water?

My new apartment came with a dish washer and I'm responsible for the water bill, so I want to use as little water as possible. The dish washer is a whirlpool with the energy star. Would it use less water to just run the dish washer when it's full or to hand wash?

Believe it or not, a dishwasher uses less water. If it's just you, then you won't have to run the dishwasher daily, which will be even cheaper. However, make sure you rinse the dishes %26amp; silverware well before putting them into the dishwasher. Doing that, cuts down on the odor, until you run your dishwasher. Use the ';Heat'; option on your dishwasher, to dry the dishes, etc. or you'll end up with spots. There should be a place on the door for adding ';Rinse %26amp; Dry'; which eliminates spots. I like a dishwasher because it gets the water much hotter than what comes out of the faucet. Disconnect the drain line on the dishwasher and put it into a five gallon pail while you do a load of dishes and compare the amount you use. You will also have disconnect the j pipe under your sink and catch all the water you use during your hand washing. This is quite physical but the results will be precise.

it various from family to family, some family don't wash dishes for weeks (ewwwwww), then suddenly use the dish washer and some just constantly use it :P

Hand washing will use less water and power. Once you get into the habit of washing up every time you use some dishes it is almost easier than rinsing and stacking dishes for a dish washer.
hand wash them saves electricity and water(if you dont run the tap for half an hour lol)
